Huskies Finish Third at State of Maine Championship

        GORHAM, Maine - Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, Maine) placed first in the mile run and ran the first leg in the University of Southern Maine Huskies winning 4 x 800-meter relay team to lead the Huskies to a third place finish at the 2006 State of Maine Championships Saturday night at the USM Field House in Gorham. 
    Southern Maine finished third with 130 points behind first place Bowdoin College with 183.5 points and second place Bates College with 159.50 points.  Colby College rounded out the meet in fourth place with 48 points. 
      Bunker won an exciting race in the mile earning the first place finish in the final 50 meters of the race.  Bowdoin College junior Owen McKenna (Amston, Conn.) led the race heading into the final lap and held his lead through the first turn before USM junior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) overtook McKenna for the lead in the back stretch.  Bunker, Hopkins and McKenna were nearly three across with Hopkins holding a slight lead into the last turn before Bunker overtook McKenna and Hopkins for the win in the final paces of the race.  Bunker finished with a time of 4:18.47, while Hopkins placed second in a time of 4:18.64.  McKenna earned the third spot with a time of 4:19.22. 
   In the 4 x 800-meter relay, Bunker led the Huskies to a first place finish running the first leg of the relay.  Southern Maine won the race in a time of 8:10.47, nearly four seconds ahead of second place Bates College.  Joining Bunker on the winning relay team were sophomores Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) and Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vermont/North Country Union) and Hopkins.
  Southern Maine continued to exert its strength in the middle distance and distance events as Curtis Wheeler won the 1000-meter run in a time of 2:37.47, narrowly edging McKenna who placed second with a time of 2:37.86.  In the grueling 5000-meter race sophomore Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vermont/North Country Union) earned a second place finish for the Huskies in a time of 15:27.46.
     Also earning first place finishes for the Huskies were freshman sprinter Jimmy Sawyer (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) and sophomore pole vault specialist Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine/Hermon).  Sawyer won the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.50 and placed second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.03 for the Huskies, while Haggerty cleared 14-6 (4.41 meters) to win the pole vault competition.
   Sawyer also ran the anchor leg in the Huskies' school record setting 4 x 400-meter relay team.  Southern Maine placed third in the event with a time of 3:29.33.  Joining Sawyer on the record setting team was junior co-captain Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine/Windham), freshman Greg Cannon (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and junior Chris Yankopoulos (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry).
   Southern Maine returns to action Sunday (February 12) at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.  Events are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
