Penobscot/Piscataquis/Hancock Area Special Olympics will be holding a benefit 5K road race on Sunday, October 11 at 10 A.M. at the Orono/Old Town YMCA in Old Town. The race is a fundraiser to support the programs put on throughout the year for Area Special Olympics athletes. The race is named after Mickey Boutilier, founder of Special Olympics Maine. Mickey was a driving force in the Special Olympics movement since its inception in 1968. Mickey died in 2012, leaving behind an enduring legacy of support for all those with intellectual disabilities!
The race is on a flat, fast course utilizing roads and bike paths. New and experienced runners and walkers are welcome! There will be awards for top finishers, first and second place age group winners, top three Special Olympic athletes, as well as the oldest and youngest participants. Free t-shirts to first 75 registrants! Raffle prizes! Advance entry fee is $20.00 until October 07. Fee will be $25.00 after October 07.
Advance registration can be made online at runinarace.com or by requesting entry form from Paul Ciarrocchi, c/o MERT Enterprises, Inc., 225 Bomarc Road, Bangor, ME 04401. Race day registration will be from 8:30 A.M. to 9:15 A. M. at the Orono/Old Town YMCA.
The money raised for this event will be used to help support the ongoing sporting and social events conducted by the Area Special Olympics program. Money raised will also be used for equipment purchases and scholarships so athletes can attend state, national, and world games competitions.
Penobscot/Piscataquis/Hancock Area Special Olympics is a division of Special Olympics Maine and provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy while sharing their gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
