This event offers races at the 2.5 mile and 7 mile distances. Both begin in Whitneyville on the Sunrise Trail and cross the Machias River on the old railroad bridge. They then follow the Homestead Trail to where it joins the multiuse Sunrise Trail. At that point the courses split. The 2 milers go straight across and turn right on the Machias River Heritage Trail to return to Whitneyville while the 7 milers turn left and follow the Sunrise Trail towards Machias. On reaching the paved road they turn right and right again almost immediately back onto the Preserve trails and return along the entire Machias River Trail to finish in Whitneyville. The two courses are mostly single track trail with stretches along the river, under giant hemlocks, through grassy swales, over rocks and roots, bog bridges, some possible wet holes and across a beaver dam.
